Awaken Insight Retreats offer only experienced expert medition guidance as described in the earliest Buddhist texts. Tranquil wisdom insight meditation (TWIM) retreats are neither difficult nor a test of endurance, but rather, a joy-filled journey to awakening insight leading to true knowledge. TWIM combines of samatha and vipassana—tranquility and insight as described in the original dialogues of the Buddha. It is distinguished from dry insight--vipassana by the application of the four steps referred to as "Right Effort" in the Noble Eightfold Path as follows:
  1. Development of the stages of meditative understanding known as "jhanas" or levels of insight knowledge.
  2. Experience the four sublime states of loving-kindness, compassion, benevolent joy, and equniminity of mind known as "Brahmaviharas" or degrees of benevolence.
  3. Cultivate seven factors of awakening in perfect balance in jhana
  4. Experience release from delusion with direct experience of nirvāṇa (nibbāna).

Retreats combine exposure to key concepts to better cultivate wise thinking based on the realities of existence as described in the earliest Buddhists texts. The course of training offers a supportive environment to optimize progress and maximize time. Eight precepts comprise a simple code of conduct that is maintained throughout the retreat. Mindful silence with an emphasis on ease and lightheartedness is encouraged at all times.
