Early Buddhist Principles and Mediation Practices

PictureScott A. Jordan
Classes and workshops apply the methodology and training based on the earliest recorded teaching of the Buddha. Sessions include the basic delineation of how mental and emotional states function, how they are conditioned, and how they can be deconditioned. Guided and silent meditation practices are core features of each session with Q&A throughout. Classes and workshops are ideal for beginners or experienced meditators seeking a go beyond a plateau in their current meditation practice.

It is common to our attention and mood to be high-jacked by negative emotional states such as anger, jealousy, sadness, fear, and worry. This is because we are in the habit of letting it happen with our our knowledge. The goal in this meditation practice is to learn by observation precisely how our attention is conditioned to move from one mental state to another. By cultivating a calm and agile awareness along with guiding principles for practice, we learn by directly experiencing how it occurs and how to decondition it from reoccurring. Once we become knowledgeable and skilled, we are in a position to apply these techniques in daily life. The result is to become more responsive and instead of falling into emotional reactivity.

Meditation training instructions are framed in practical English terms. Sessions equip participants with a tool kit of useful knowledge and skills applicable to progressing in the stages of meditation. The well-known Noble Eight-Fold Path attribute to the Buddha is reframed as a sequence of mental actions known as the Six Rs. This methodology seamlessly develops insight and tranquility—the foundation of mental clarity, balance, and contentment. When implemented, the Six Rs become immediately effective. The combined actions are skills that decondition the root causes of anxiety, worry, and distress. Like any skill, practice builds competency. While relieving negative emotional states, practice develops mental agility, clarity, calm, and an overall sense of well-being.
Participants Learn:
  • How to use the Six Rs method to calm distracting thoughts during meditation.
  • How to transform stressful situations and conflicts to develop tranquility and clarity.
  • How to establish the essential building blocks of wise-attention and  selective thinking.
  • How to apply principles of selective thinking to resolve worry, fear, aversion and compulsions.
  • How to integrate sustainable practice compatible with active lifestyles.
